Cyclist pleads guilty to ‘revenge’ car-keying spree in Australia

A Brisbane man caught on camera repeatedly keying keying cars over an eight-month period has pleaded guilty to eight counts of wilful damage.

Keen cyclist John Lyons was captured on CCTV using a metal tool to deliberately scrape the side panels of several cars in broad daylight, with some cars targeted on multiple occasions.

9News reports Mr Lyons took out his frustrations on cars in Woolloongabba, Kangaroo Point, Fortitude Valley and New Farm before he was eventually charged.

The 51-year-old randomly selected large utes and SUVs to damage as an act of ‘revenge’ for previous incidents he had been involved in while cycling. None of the victims were known to Mr Lyons.

Having pleaded guilty, Mr Lyons will be required to serve 120 hours of community service, as well as pay $3500 in compensation. No conviction was recorded against his name.

Woolloongabba resident Mick Brown, one of the victims of the random keying spree, told The Courier Mail earlier this year that the incident had cost him and two other owners more than $10,000 in repairs.

Mr Brown claimed the culprit keyed the cars again last December after all repairs were completed, and then damaged the cars for a third time on May 5 this year.
